Flowability of steel and tool steel powders: A comparison between testing methods

The flow behaviour of a powder is critical to its performance in many industrial applications and manufacturing processes. Operations such as transfer, die filling spreading all rely on flowability. Multiple testing methods can help assessing flowability, but it not always clear which may better represent specific conditions or how different metrics correlate. This study compares 8 flowability using 11 steel powders varying chemistries size fractions. Regression analysis was used test the relationship between each metric obtained. Some metrics, conditioned bulk density, relate indicators. Others, basic energy, show poor correlations other variables, likely describing aspects behaviour. When two strong correlation, density Hausner ratio, numerical derived: CBD = ? (5.65 ± 0.86)HR g cm?3.
